Physically- speaking, I think
that different bits die at different times. Say you drown or suffocate.
First you stop breathing. Then your heart stops. A few minutes without
oxygenated blood + brain damage begins.
After say 10 minutes, I
guess the brain is pretty badly damaged ; if someone tries to revive you
after that, you will be severely brain damaged, if you even survive at
all. Your other organs are still alive though. They might be transplanted
into someone else + then live for many years.
Spiritually speaking,
the Biblical view seems (to me) to be that death is essentially
separation. Death separates married couples + others who love. Death
separates the body from the "life- giving spirit", which is eternal. The
Bible even refers to people who live separated from God as being "dead"
(spiritually).
