1) Holding the umbrella in a vertical position.
2) Holding it so that it is resting on your shoulder at a slight angle like holding a parasol.

ANSWER

Why do I get depressed and get tension headaches before a storm? Is it the air pressure? Why does this affect my mood and not everyone else's?
ANSWER

For those with an interest in weather, the USA now has a system for analysing expected rainfall rates from satellite images. Images of billow clouds caused by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability
ANSWER

What causes the smell of rain?
Chemicals in soil.
smell of rain
smell of rain.

LIGHTNING & THUNDER

Lightning & Thunder?
ANSWER

Also what is the signal for a raincloud to dump it's load, and do they 'rain' themselves out?
ANSWER

Having taught that lightning goes from clouds to the ground for so many years, I was surprised to hear whilst watching a documentary on lightning that this is not the case. Apparently, most lightning goes from the ground to the clouds. Can anybody give me a reason why this is so?
ANSWER

What factors/things/etc determine whether lightning is 'focused', like the one in the image, or really 'forky', or more 'widespread', like sheet lightning? Can the pattern of lightning change between different types in one storm, or throughout the course of storms that occur close together?
ANSWER

I was listening to a thunder storm last night. If the lightening hits close you just get one loud short crash. If it is far away you start with a low rumble that increases to a crash then ebbs off with a low rumble again. I assume the cause is that the distance amplifies the difference in time that different sound waves arrive. Is this because certain pitches (length) of sound waves travel at different speeds or is it because for the waves travelling at different speed through different atmosperic presures and arriving at different times. My other thought was echos but that doesn't really gel because the low rumble crash low rumble is very uniform with regardless of where you are.?
ANSWER

We haven't had a good lighting show over here in the west for some time?
ANSWER

There was this long, reasonably thin cloud out to the east, and it was flashing. It looked just like lightning except it was only within the cloud. It was only lighting up a section of the cloud at a time, but seemed to jump to other parts of the cloud. I would describe it as 'horizontal lightning'. There were other clouds around but only this one was flashing, and the lightning was confined only to the cloud, it wasn't like normal lightning were you see a bolt, this seemed to be more like a ball within the cloud. It was so cool, I sat out there for ages, but what I really want to know is what's going on there?
ANSWER

If you're in an inground swimming pool and lightning strikes nearby or a tree or lighting pole, would you get electrocuted?
ANSWER

I have heard of several instances where the dead wood of trees that have been struck by lightning does not burn.?
ANSWER

I know that lightning is attracted to the negative charge of the earth, but would it be possible for a transatlantic flight to be hit by lightning above the clouds?
ANSWER

I would imagine a thunderstorm never happening in a dry, low humidity environment?
ANSWER

CLOUD

Can someone explain how large clouds seem to be quite flat on the bottom when you look at them? There was often HUGE inverted cone-shaped thunderstorms, over 50 miles across. The tops were a fair bit bigger than the lower parts
ANSWER

WIND

What is Australia's windiest city?
ANSWER

Why is Australia so dry? Anything to do with El Nino?
ANSWER

Is Wind Burn real ?
ANSWER

On Earth, is there an upper limit to how fast wind can travel. Tornadoes excepted
ANSWER

As I understand, air from a high pressure region surges towards low pressure regions. However, because of all the flat surfaces on buildings and man-made structures, is it feasible to say that this has any effect on the high-low shift of air? The air getting trapped in all the nooks and crannies of the houses, and the air "sitting" in such areas for a longer amount of time, could this affect the movement of air?
ANSWER

Why are there such strong westerly winds on the east coast especially in late winter
ANSWER

Why does the air feel cool when you drive along in your car with the window down? (assuming no AC) Surely the air is the same temperature outside the car. Any ideas?
ANSWER

RAINBOWS & HALO

Atmospheric Optical Phenomena

What causes a rainbow? Why are rainbows curved?
Reflection and refraction in water droplets.
Rainbows.
There was a large ring around the moon. can anyone explain this phenomena?
ANSWER

Rainbows-how are they produced? Scientific American explains how.

In Brisbane, at around 3:40 pm, there was a partial rainbow about 15 degrees to the north of the sun, with the sun at its centre. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?
ANSWER

Min Mins lights Does anybody know the scientific reason behind these things?
ANSWER

Does the Antarctic have an aurora and would it under extreme solar activity be visible from central NSW & St Elmo's Fire
ANSWER

GREENHOUSE & OZONE

Is global warming a hoax?
Global warming?
Global warming
Global Temperatures
Global warming
Polar melt and freeze.

Greenhouse Effect Is this upper atmospheric warming taking place or not?
ANSWER
Greenhouse Effect

Is the ozone hole is actually over Australia for certain periods? I've look casually at the uv index's and it seems to be always in the high to very high range?
ANSWER

Are you more likely to get UV skin damage in Queensland because you are closer to the equator or in Tasmania because you are closer to the hole in the ozone layer???
ANSWER

FORECASTING

How do meteorologists forecast the temperature for the coming days?
ANSWER

Global wind patterns explained.
World wide weather

How accurate are they, really?
Accuracy of Weather forecasts

What type of model is used in weather prediction?
Weather models

Is there anywhere on the Bureau of Meteorology (or other weather sites) where I can get a chart of monthly average rainfall, windspeed, temps etc for a particular region or state? Like a little bar graph thingy I guess.
ANSWER

Why do we look to the West for signs of what the future weather will be? In other words, what causes our weather to march across the surface of the world from West to East?
ANSWER

Pink sky in the morning, shepherds warning
Pink sky at night, shepherds delight
is this true, and if so why?

ANSWER

One thing that have me puzzled is when the weather forcaster says "no rain for the next 4 days,...barometer falling.." I always thought that when the barometer is falling, that means rain is on its way?
ANSWER

What credence does the Bureau of Meteorology place on the long range forecasting of Hayden Walker et al
ANSWER

MISCELLANEOUS

Is it true that the temperature is coldest right before snow falls? If it's true, why?
ANSWER

Why do ants come out and run around crazy when it is going to rain?
ANSWER

Can someone please settle this argument I've been having with a friend... When it rains, is that "classed" as 100% humidity?
ANSWER

Just how do clouds stay aloft? I thought water vapour was heavier than air.
ANSWER

And when the rain does fall, what is the shape of the falling raindrop, spherical, oval, teardrop?
Do all raindrops fall at a uniform velocity?
When the rain hits the ground, are the raindrops of uniform size?
If not, what factors influence the weight of raindrops, and the standard deviation of their weight?

ANSWER

Is it true you can only catch fish on a high pressure?
ANSWER

Is there any definite proof that cloud seeding works as claimed.?
ANSWER

Recently on a foggy day the fog turned pink and purple. Does anybody know why?
ANSWER

Why is it colder at higher altitudes?
Why is it colder at higher altitudes?

I was watching a documentary on people climbing Mt Everest a couple of days ago, and it suddenly struck me that the peak of the mountain was covered in snow & ice, and I couldn't immediately figure out why .... Up at the 29,000' odd of Mt Everest, liquid water could not exist, so there must be only ice crystals floating around in the clouds. No doubt some of them would stick to the rocks, but they'd have to be very dry at that height, so how could so much ice & snow accumulate up there?
ANSWER

The question should not be "why does it get colder as you get higher in the atmosphere" but "why does it get warmer as you get lower in the atmosphere". If you ask the second question rather than the first you are halfway to an explanation.?
ANSWER

Why does it get colder in the wee hours. Why is it coldest at dawn?
ANSWER

Why is the sky blue?
Rayleigh scattering of light.
Blue sky.
