ANSWER

I would like to know how sleep actually disengages your consciousness?
From: J.F.
When we sleep, our basal ganglia in the brain cause our muscles to relax AFAIK, stopping us acting out all the dreams. In sleepwalking, this must be a bit faulty.

We still hear. We are aware of some things e.g. pain makes for light + broken sleep. We may wake if we are too cold, hot, or need to go to the toilet. So awareness is altered, not abolished.

Things we hear may be incorporated into our dreams.

The feeling of becoming conscious while your body is still asleep, no way of waking yourself up, but you are aware in the same way as you are when you are awake normally.
