A doubting friend noticed that
there were no stars visible in the sky in a photo of Neil Armstrong on the
moon. He had the impression that one should see many many stars in this
photo as there is little atmosphere on the moon and the sky is black.
I think that no stars are visible because just as in the daytime on
earth when the sun is the brightest object in the sky all other stars are
not visible, and so to in a lunar day. I also thought that the brightness
of the lunar surface would reduce star-gazing just like a city's glow.
Am i correct or are all the conspiracy theorists correct when they say
that the sky should be filled with many stars in these photos??? (Of
course on the dark side of the moon star-gazing should be
magnificent)

The glare is the main thing. The
reason you don't see the stars in the day on earth is that our atmosphere
scatters the light from the sun (blue light in particular) and this is
brighter than the stars.
Thus is's all a matter of relative contrast. The stars are just too
faint to see compared to the other bright
objects.

You are both incorrect (or both
correct if you would prefer)
It is scatterred sunlight that
overpowers the light from stars and renders them invisible during the day
on Earth. There is no atmosphere on the Moon to scatter the sunlight so
indeed stars are readily visible from the Moon during the day - many more
stars than are visible from the Earth during night in fact.
The
reason no stars appear in the pictures on the Moon is the same reason that
stars do not appear in video taken at night - the video cameras are not
sensitive enough to detect the faint stars particularly in comparison to a
bright foreground.

I've said it before & I'll
say it again..
People expect to see stars in space.
If
they hadn't been to the moon to know better,
they would've included
stars in the fake photos!
just check out any Sci-Fi film.. it not
hard to include stars in a fake
picture!!
