:):):)
Farewell to the 9 previous SSSF Quotes threads, welcome
to Number X, may the sailing be smooth:)
Someone asked if
there are any rules.
We are making them up as we go...”good
manners and wit” are usually quite conducive to make the ride
un-bumpy;-).
Here is what a few others thought:

Very simple, and self evident.
1. Don't
continue arguments in the quotes threads
2. Don't post anything
that could be remotely construed as a personal attack.
This is the
Covenant of the Quote Threads

Just looked up the details...
Galileo
wrote to the Medicis, "Haec immatura a me iam frustra leguntur
oy." "These unripe things are read by me oy" ... an odd thing to say,
especially with the meaningless oy on the end.
It was an anagram
for "Cynthiae figuras aemulatur Mater Amorum".
meaning "Cynthia's
figures are imitated by the Mother of Love".
He was basically
wanting to publish the fact that he had observed that Venus showed phases,
just as the moon does, but didn't want to come out and say it in case
someone set fire to him.

For some years, my living was made in the ADF. A worthy
profession, the great value of which most of this country is completely
ignorant of.
For a few years thereafter, my living was made helping
to market the technology of war to various customers.
In the course
of those few years, i was witness to enough of the "application" of that
technology to case me to leave the work, or anything associated with it,
forever.
I have a healthy interst in technology, even some things
like nice old aeroplanes, and submarines, and so forth.
I do not
care for their intended purpose at all.
If someone asks a question
about some facets of technology, i may be able to provide an answer.
Please, don't confuse what i know with what i like, or approve
of.

...You recall,
elsewhere, we discussed the dividing line between hunter-gatherer science,
and the Accumulation-science that produces these Miracles of our Age? I
called it the Pandora limit? Well… here' s another thought…
There
is another limit, fast approaching. The time when the information itself
begins to accumulate itself. I'm talking about Artificial Intelligence.
We humans will become irrelevant to Information. Information will
no longer need us. The most miraculous thing to spring from Pandora's
knowledge box will be living information.
The rate of
accumulation, the rate of effectiveness of information, will jump by the
same factor as the first Limit. We are currently like Ghengis Khan, unable
to see what our pony express will lead to.
And I think the
Internet, this Pony Express, is its pre-natal spinal cord. Our thoughts,
ideas, our politics, our philosophies, our science, are it's constituent
DNA.
I hope our common child will treat its parents well…

Indeed.
A looks at theory X. A doesn't
understand X, and thinks it complicated. A looks at theory Y, same. Don't
understand. Is Y too complicated? A thinks so. Same with Z. A sees a
pattern here, call it M. Come A's time, A looks at theory P, deceptively
simple. A works P into Q, making it hideously complicated as per learning
pattern M established above. A's work is done!
But which is really
P and which Q?
Hmmmm. A

You have Scientific facts which are part of nature and
through observation can be verified. THese are real facts.
Then
you have artifical facts. These are man made. They are produced by
an organization called The Media. The media employs workers called
journalists to manufacture facts in factories. These factories are
sometimes refered to as news rooms. These artifical facts are far
inferior to the natural occuring facts, in fact they often contain dints
and cracks but the workers at the factories very rarely appoligise for the
shoddy imitation of the real thing.

Two great links in as many days - my "Favorites" is/are?
getting crowded.
I think it's 'are.' Studying some physics now are
we? Just remember:
1)Leave your preconceptions at the front
door.
2) Drop your common sense in the first room to your
right
3) Pick up a sense of wonder from the third room on your
left
4) Put your thinking cap and mindblowing safety helmet
on.
5) Be careful to stay with the group to not get lose when
touring the engineering, technology, cosmology (and especially) the
astronomy exhibits
6) At the end of it all, have a beer or two to
forget everything you learned and to bring you back down to
Earth!

Life is a self-creating-and-perpetuating,
information-constructing-and-storing eddy in the flow of
entropy.
Either that or just a bowl of
cherries.

We could push the moon into the asteroids path like a
billiard ball, use it as a sacrificial deflection element? In such a way
that both asteroid and moon miss the earth, of course we lose our
moon......which would ruin the view at
night.

"Who was
priminister of Australia during WW11."
Woo hoo! This is a pedant's
birthday present!
1/ The expression is 'prime minister'.
2/
There was not been a WW11 yet, and I hope there never will be. There was,
however, a WWII.
3/ This is clearly a question, but there is no
question mark.
4/ Australia had five prime ministers during
WWII.
May the law of recursive pedantry strike me
down.

A hypothesis:
The evolutionary
advantage of private sex is that it makes it easier for women to diversify
the gene pool by means of a bit on the side, without losing the advantage
of a stable home with a long term mate.
