When looking at a candle
flame, there is a pale blue flame at the very base of the candle and of
course the yellow tip.Which of the two is hottest in the candle flame?
Also does the answer change depending on what type of candle you are
burning?

gudday natho, i'm no genius, but
i shall have an attempt at explaining your question. the blue consists
mainly of unburnt gases, whereas the yellow is burnt substance. i know
this from spending hours all on my lonesome playing with my bunsen burner,
which has a distinct colour difference in the flame, and the lower blue
coloured flame does not light a taper at all, hence it's a lot colder than
the blue (which does light the taper).
u know anything about
neurons? if so, read 'crazy neuron business'.
cheers,
woosbo.

Don't know about which bit is
hotter, or which bit lights a taper, but I do know that the yellow colour
generally comes from particles of soot 'burning' in the
flame.

We were always told by our
science teacher at high school that the hottest part of the Bunsen
burner's flame was at the very tip of the blue part of the
flame.
Before you use the Bunsen, you need to close the air holes
at the bottom by turning the little metal doohickey (The flame goes from
the orange "Safety Flame" to blue). This would tend to support what I have
already said, because I assume you would want to work with the hotter of
the two flames. If the orange flame was hotter, I assume we would use that
one all the time instead of turning the doohickey (I feel terribly
unscientific calling it a doohickey. Can anyone tell me the proper
name?).
Hope this helps you
out...
