Synthetic material: material made
from synthetic fibre, that is, fibre that does not exist in nature. Rayon
is an example.
A monomer is a chemical species that can be
polymerised to make a polymer e.g. ethylene.
A polymer is a
chemical species made by joining together a whole swag of monomers via
polymerisation. e.g. polyethylene.
Polymerisation is the act of
sticking together a bunch of monomers to make a
polymer.

DV... I think that definition for
synthetic material is a bit too case-specific. A synthetic material is
basically anything that is synthesised... made by human hands as opposed
to a natural occurance
