It is really all just
common sense once you know how to search. Google™
Advanced Google™ defaults to Boolean AND automatically encloses
phrases in quotation marks. Use the boxes to require and exclude
search terms.
Order
of results: Google™'s PageRank algorithm ranks pages based on
the number of other pages that link to a given document. That is,
the more frequently a document is linked to, the "better" it is.
What is displayed?: Results include document title, first
few words of text, URL, and a link to a previous version of the
page.
Eg ABC News Message Board
Open ... The forum asked ABC News Online users to
give their first impressions as the goods and services tax (GST)
came into effect on July 1, 2000. ... www2.abc.net.au/news/tax/forum/main.htm - 3k -

Say we have a sample
question. Quinine stops people from getting malaria but is it by
stopping the mosquitoes or the malaria Do a search in Google™ on
quinine and you get 42,000 pages. However if I was going to ask an
online doctor about Quinine. How would I phrase the question???
How does Quinine …blah blah So let's search
…
in Google™ Advanced.
Open Google™ Advanced
and in the box marked "with the exact phrase" I put in the three
word line enclose in quotation marks and I get 24 pages instead of
42,000 and most of those 24 are doctors being asked
questions.
Looking For Pictures.
For
a school project or whatever. Right here at Google™ advanced there
is a folder on the page that specialises in finding only pictures
from various Web sites
Say you are looking for
pictures of Giraffes. Just enter the word and push the search
button. Then select the images folder as shown in the
picture.
It's as
easy as that.
REFERENCE PAGES / INFORMATION SITES There
are quite a few major resource sites all over the net. Google™
offers a search through 1,346,966,000 web pages. So there is an
exceedingly large amount of data out there to be found. (And that
is only one search engine from all the major search engines on the
net.) Putting things in perspective, if you opened every page
available at a rate of one per second, you will not see them all
in your lifetime. But do not despair, the very thing you may need
to make your life a better one could be as close as a simple
search. From personal experience the information available on the
Internet has been of great benefit. Even the best of us do not
know all there is to be known but it's all out there. A billion
minds or more acting as one in the modern Great Library of
Alexandria. From the mundane to the inane to the
phenomenal. Experimental site searches to find good source
material is highly recommended. Here is a start.
A
site like this is called a PORTAL by
Internet users. Basically it contains links to all the major sites
worth looking at that are relevant the subject you have
chosen.
as it generally explains things in a language
understandable to a layperson like myself.
Pick and choose
your own. The individual search engine here is a single box. If
you want to know what "Cramps" are then the search is easy. Just
insert the word "Cramps" into the search engine and away you
go. If for instance you say "I have a sore throat and bad
breath" Then you can search
like I demonstrated
earlier and it finds documents with all three words. With a little
nous you may be able to work out a good prospect from there. And
then you can present these ideas to your doctor who should be able
to narrow down problems quickly.
Never assume the Internet
is absolutely accurate or up to date. But it is often a good
start.
Shopping The future of shopping -- the Internet.
Here are a few tips to follow when shopping on the net: Shop
only with reputable companies. Know where they are physically
located. For example, if you were walking down the street and a
person in a trench coat called you over to show you some nice
watches for sale in the lining of his coat, would you hand him
your credit card? No, you wouldn't. The Internet can be like this.
You could be dealing with a guy in a trench coat. Resolving
problems with unknown companies at undisclosed locations can be a
problem.
Get complete information on the item. Know the
delivery date, guarantee or warranties on the item. Print out the
information for your reference.
Do not base a buying
decision on the quality of the Web site. A flashy Web site
does not guarantee a quality product. Look for policies that say
they do not sell your information to other companies. Usually they
do not sell credit card numbers, but selling addresses and email
address is common.
If you decide to do business with them,
never store your credit card number on the site. Most of the
big sites and some of the little sites allow you to select a user
name and password so that you can enter the site and get access to
your account. The site will keep your name, address and credit
card number stored for you so that the next time you shop it will
be easier. This is not a good idea because hackers are good at
guessing passwords and user names and they could easily hack into
your account and get your information. After all, you wouldn't
leave your credit card on the counter at a department store so
don't leave it on the Internet.
A safe way to do business
at auctions is by online bank accounts. You can open an on-line
bank account and transfer the money via e-mail addresses. Most of
these on-line banks have already done a check to see if the seller
is legitimate and some will even guarantee that you get your
product.
Know the return and refund policies for the sites
on the Internet that you shop at Make sure you are able to
return items if you don't like them or if they are broken. Most
sites will take back broken or non-working items, but most of the
time you must pay for return postage.
Give a credit card
out only to a reputable company Check the security of the
transmission by asking the company what encryption software it
uses. Contact the company providing the technology to see if the
site is actually using its software. Do not trust a site that
claims it is secure -- make the effort to verify that security.
You web browser will usually tell you if you are accessing a web
page with a secure connection, either by popup windows or by a
small padlock symbol on the bottom of the browser window.
Shopping on the Internet can be efficient and useful when
the company is reputable and can be trusted with your credit card
number. Be knowledgeable and enjoy.!
In
the top right hand side at this site there is a little search box
which searches all online newspapers and nothing else. Again if
you search a single word you could be swamped. The trick is to
think like a journalist and imagine how the article will read.
Then select two or more key words and put them together in
quotation marks. Eg for an article on a new Cancer
Test
It then looks for all the articles that have these two
words grouped together.

Disadvantages of free web
sites The main disadvantages of free web sites are:
You look like a hobbyist, not a serious business. OR
you look like someone whose business is doing so badly he can't
afford anything better. Your URL is usually too long and
complicated for people to remember - unless you use a forwarding
service. However, if you ARE a hobbyist and want to project
the image of one, a free web site may suit you perfectly. Free
sites may also insert advertisements into your web pages. They may
also claim ownership of any item(s) you store on their website for
their own use. Check the terms of service before you sign up with
a free web service. Often your own ISP will offer a certain amount
of free webspace to their subscribers.
Advantages of free web sites One site not
enough? You can increase your chances of getting hits by setting
up several free web sites, perhaps to sell different items, or to
concentrate on different keywords for search
engines.
