GEOLOGY

Can anyone please tell me what a geologist does?
ANSWER
ANSWER

How old is the earth?
Although there is some uncertainty in our estimate of the age of the earth, the correct age is almost certainly close to 4 ½ billion years.
How old is the Earth?

How were the rocks formed?
ANSWER
What are Rocks?

If the whole earth formed at the same time, why isn't the majority of rock the same age?
ANSWER

Is the middle of the earth older or younger?

GEOLOGY IN SPACE

How can you tell if a rock is from outer space?
ANSWER
Rocks from Mars

What is the moon made of & how do we know. (We only took a little sample from one spot)
ANSWER

Why is Mars like it is? Here is a planet about half Earth's diameter and yet with the highest mountain [Olympus Mons] in the solar system and trenches and rifts that make the Grand canyon look puny. Is there any obvious reason why this is so?
ANSWER

Mining the moon or meteors. Why?
ANSWER
Mining the moon

EARTHQUAKE & VOLCANO

Plate Tectonics Why are the Faults at those spots?
ANSWER
Earthquake Causes
Earthquake Myths debunked
Plate Tectonics, the Cause of Earthquakes

What causes earthquakes?
Earthquakes are almost always caused by tectonic activity; speaking crudely, the movement of the tectonic plates causes enormous stresses. Eventually these reach the maximum stress that the rock can withstand. It fails. The energy is released as movement, seismic waves etc.

Could we get a big earthquake in Australia? Where??
This is not impossible, but not likely. Australia is not terribly near any tectonic plate boundaries.

Why are we moving, where are we moving & at what speed?
ANSWER

Where will Australia be in 1M 10M 100M years?
ANSWER

What causes volcanoes?
ANSWER
The Nature of Volcanoes How Volcanoes work

Australia's the flattest continent on Earth. From that information, I would assume that there is the least amount of crust between us and the mantle. So how come lots of countries from 'thicker' continents get volcanoes, while Australia hasn't had one for donkey's ages?
ANSWER

Why is volcanic soil so fertile?

How do they know where to look for;
  • Gold
  • Oil (especially under the oceans)

ANSWER

GOLD Where does it come from?
ANSWER

How do you distinguish gold from fool's gold?
ANSWER

I'm interested in geology, geography of the sea floor, what's down there, how we know.?
ANSWER

I was wondering if gemstones are Metamorphic Rocks?
As far as geologists are concerned, gemstones are not rocks (or stones for that matter) but minerals. Some gems, such as garnets and sapphires, are minerals formed by metamorphic action, but others, such as amethysts, are not.
Metamorphic Rocks

How closely related atomically - or otherwise- are the metals, Silver, lead, zinc, cadmium, & gold? All these minerals are present in the ore that comes from Broken Hill. Is there any reason why they should all appear together in the same ore?

Silver, Lead & Zinc

DIAMONDS

DIAMONDS General details (Hardness, melting point, strength, chemical formula)
ANSWER
DIAMOND

How do they know where to look for them.?
ANSWER
Diamonds: How Do Diamonds Move to the Earth's Surface

Why so expensive? What are the differences between diamonds?
ANSWER

What would happen if I put a diamond
  • In a microwave oven
  • In a fire
  • In liquid nitrogen
  • In lava

ANSWER

Do they cut glass?
Yes.

How can you tell if you have a real one and not glass?
ANSWER

How would you make a diamond? Coal under high pressure? If I threw coal into the deepest part of the ocean, would it make a diamond?
ANSWER

Is a Buckyball a diamond?

ANSWER
