EVOLUTION FAQ's INDEX

Talk.origins is a Usenet newsgroup devoted to the discussion and debate of biological and physical origins. Most discussions in the newsgroup center on the creation/evolution controversy, but other topics of discussion include the origin of life, geology, biology, catastrophism, cosmology and theology.

Evolution

What is evolution?
Introduction to Evolutionary Biology
Evolution is a Fact and a Theory
What is evolution?

What evidence is there that evolution has occurred?
Field observations, fossils and genetic evidence. The study is saturated with evidence, here is just a small snippit.

Fossil Hominids The Evidence for Human Evolution
Evolution from clay?
Evolution from clay (part II),
Evidence for Evolution.

How could a random process like evolution produce the exquisite forms of life we see today?
There's more to evolution than randomness.
I don't believe in evolution

How could DNA arise spontaneously?
Evolution.

How did the first little critters formed know to reproduce?
Evolution

Does anyone know of current theories about how DNA formed into a reliable genetic coding system?
Does any one have opinions (informed or otherwise) on the chances of finding life on Europa, in the atmosphere of Jupiter, or (as remains) on Mars?

Would it be possible that life might restart from scratch on earth somewhere today, in much the same way that it initially started?

Life and DNA

Why is it that dogs can see only in monochrome and cats can see in colour? What is the evolutionary reasoning behind this?
ANSWER

Didn't Darwin renounce evolution on his deathbed?
The Darwin deathbed story is false. And in any case, it is irrelevant. A scientific theory stands or falls according to how well it is supported by the facts, not according to who believes it.
The Lady Hope Story: A Widespread Falsehood

Are entropy and evolution compatible; the first tending to decrease order, the second tending to increase order?
Entropy and Evolution

It's interesting how children from parents of a different culture can, when raised in another culture, adapt to it. Do you think, that the reason for this adaptation is that all cultures are determined by the characteristics of our biological brains?
Does human culture have a biological basis?

Does our complexity really make us superior? 95% of all living creatures that have walked the Earth at some time in our history are now extinct. One day, this too could be us. But bacteria will survive while life remains possible on Earth.
Human arrogance

It occurred to us that bees are poorly evolved (if that has any meaning). What is the point of having a defence mechanism that kills the user upon use?. Surely it is possible to evolve a better defense mechanism.?.
Are bees poorly evolved?

How do complementary things evolve, especially things like sex organs?
Complementary Evolution

Could a single celled plant evolve into a single celled animal?
Could a single celled animal evolve into a single celled plant?
Is there a point of no return in evolution?

If humans evolved from apes, why don't we see apes evolving today?
Humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor. Evolution is continuing today.

THE RNA WORLD THEORY
THE RNA WORLD THEORY states that during the evolution of life on Earth, RNA was the precursor molecule (i.e. came before DNA/RNA/PROTEIN) of basic biochemical functions for early life forms.

RNA WORLD THEORY states that the earliest molecule of life was RNA as RNA can serve the dual role of storing genetic information (like DNA) AND catalyzing chemical reactions (like enzymes) including chemical reactions for self replication of RNA molecules.

So what happened later on in time? Later these RNA molecules acquired a cell membrane.

RNA WORLD THEORY tries to explain that as time progressed, RNA catalyzed the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids to form proteins. Later on, enzymes became more efficient in catalyzing chemical reactions and enzymes took over the role of these reactions. Later, DNA took over the role of genetic information storage (the hard drive for the genes!). RNA acts as a intermediary of genetic information inside the cell. This leads us to the present Central Dogma of Genetics format seen in most life forms on Earth
