DNA History
DNA was first discovered way back in 1869 by Johann Friedrich Miescher. He called his molecule nuclein, but today we know that Miescher's nuclein was actually DNA and RNA. It wasn't until the 1950's that DNA was determined to be the genetic material. This was accomplished by two scientists, Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase, who studied viral replication in bacteria. But the "great" discovery was still to come in 1953 when James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the three-dimensional structure of DNA: a double helix (a double helix looks like a spiral staircase).

Mapping the DNA with Dr Karl S. Kruszelnicki
We humans have invented the wheel, tamed fire, invented income tax and got to the Moon and back. But if you believe the hype, these accomplishments are nothing, compared to the fact that we have just recently mapped most of the human DNA.

What does it all mean? This latest research tells us that the human DNA is a strange thing. You can look upon it as a 'History Book' - where the DNA tells the history of where various creatures have invaded us and set up home. In another sense, you can look on our human DNA as a 'Parts Manual' for growing arms and legs, and organs. And in another sense, you can look upon the human DNA as a 'Medical Text Book', with advice on how to fix various diseases. And of course, as we learn more, we'll see the DNA in many more different ways.

ANSWER

Now that mankind has an idea of the human genome, instead of cloning, is it possible to synthesize the human DNA in totality to create life without cloning?
ANSWER

Over the recent debate over cloning for infertile couples, I was wondering why they don't just insert the male's cells into a different man's spermatagonium so that the sperm would be produced with the infertile male's DNA. Thus the child would be produced as normal (mitochondrial DNA of the sperm never enters the ovum). Why don't they do that instead of a complete clone?

World's first genetically altered babies born ? Two mother No father
World's first genetically altered babies born
July 1997: Things start to get really strange. Can a person have two biological mothers? A woman gives birth with an egg that is partly hers and partly another woman's. As women get older, their eggs become less permeable to sperm. To get around that, scientists take the outer layer of a younger woman's egg and combine it with the nucleus of the older woman. Most of a person's genetic material resides in the nucleus.
