Isn't it just gas escaping from the stomach?

I've heard of a bloke who had surgery to reduce reflux. His small intestine was wrapped around the inlet of his stomach ("sphincter"). He could no longer burp or throw up, big problem if he got food poisoning

Conditions like a hiatal hernia and surgery can result in difficulty in belching, this results in a bloated feeling after meals.

Conditions that may effect the valve at the top of the stomach may have the same result as well.

Swallowing is referred to in medical terms as deglutition. Swallowing is actually a reflex which is initiated when a food or beverage is pushed backwards into the back of the mouth (pharynx) by the tongue. The food or beverage is then automatically (involuntarily) pushed down the tube to the stomach (oesophagus).
During swallowing the breathing passage (glottis) in the back of the mouth is closed as a part of the reflex. Thus, breathing is temporarily stopped while swallowing.
A belch is the expulsion through the mouth of gas from the stomach or oesophagus. This is accomplished by relaxing the oesophageal sphincters (upper and/or lower) and increasing abdominal pressure. The glottis (opening to the trachea and lungs) is closed.

*burp* (excuse me)

I was wondering about burps, ie: i gather that they are simply air popping out of us... but why the horrible noise?? is it something to do with vocal cords running in reverse??
How is it that small boys can sometimes burp on cue, and at different pitches?? is there some sort of ritual exercise to partake in which to strengthen ones burping muscles??

No, i dont want stronger ones, im just curious.
Thanx
*snicker*
Gus.

burps do not go anywhere near the vocal cords, they are a release of air through the oesophagus. The air is taken in with food. Some people who have had their larynx removed due to cancer can teach themselves to speak using burps. They swallow air then let it out under control. Jack Hawkins, the actor, was accomplished at this. It is called oesophageal speech.

Yes, I can crank them out a rate of approx 1 per second. (I need a little time to suck more air in between burps.) I can also control the pitch, but I would need a couple of backing burpers to make an interesting tune.
